Emoji have become an inescapable part of our daily lives. This short film examines the far-reaching impact of these very special characters.

Emojis are not emoticons

Emoticon means โ€œemotionโ€ and โ€œiconโ€ โ€” you make an emotion with characters available on your regular keyboard :-). Kaomoji, taken from Japanese โ€œkaoโ€ (face) and โ€œmojiโ€ (character) are a popular Japanese emoticon style made up of Japanese characters and grammar punctuations, and are used to express emotion in texting and cyber communication (โ•ฏยฐโ–กยฐ)โ•ฏ๏ธต โ”ปโ”โ”ป. The word is taken from Japanese โ€œeโ€ (picture) and โ€œmojiโ€ (character). They are pictographs, which is why we have emojis to depict things that arenโ€™t just emotions.

Emoji have been around since 1999

They didnโ€™t become popular until Apple incorporated the Unicode Standard in its operating systems that people figured out how to use them in their keyboards.

Small pictures are quickly becoming a second language, and itโ€™s important that everyone can communicate freely, efficiently and expressively, even in the office environment. Thatโ€™s why Weekdone just released emoji support. Now you can say your week went ๐Ÿ˜ or ๐Ÿ˜ž. We are rolling out a custom picker with the most commonly used and #SFW ones, available at the bottom of your โ€œWeekly Reviewโ€ for quick access. We donโ€™t have a limit which ones you can use, and youโ€™re welcome to use any one available on your emoji keyboard.

Update (23 september 2015):

We have released the custom emoji picker for all Weekdone users. Look for a smiley-face icon to the right of adding new items, underneath your weekly review, and opening automatically when you like an item. This way you can further explain your โ€œlikeโ€ with a fun image and surprise your teammates with something fun and positive.

The picker features 4 main categories, a search functionality and remembers your 8 last used emoji for quick access.
